Get Involved
With your generous help, Kenzie's CLOSET is able to provide free prom attire to hundreds of economically disadvantaged high school girls in the Greater Cincinnati area each year who otherwise could not afford it.
Being able to attend their prom like their peers promotes self-confidence for these deserving young women and also provides a night to remember and the knowledge that people care.
Individuals, groups and businesses can get involved in helping Kenzie's CLOSET in a number of ways including:
Organize a Dress Drive
Thank you for your interest in organizing a dress drive!
Here are some easy steps to follow to help make sure you are successful in collecting donations for Kenzie's CLOSET.
School or Community Dress Drive
- GET VOLUNTEERS — Don't try to do this alone! Talk to others, get them excited about the project and get commitments from people who are willing to help.
- SET DATE & LOCATION — Check with your volunteers and select a date and location that works for everyone.
- PROMOTE — Make sure you spread the word! Download and fill out the promotional flier (click to download a pdf), make copies, give them to your volunteers and post them everywhere you think potential donors will see them. You also can send out a short publicity notice to area newspapers for publication in their community calendar or to churches for publication in their bulletins. Make sure the place, time and date you are collecting are prominent in all of your promotional activities.
- GET PLACE TO STORE DRESSES — Make sure you have a large and clean place to store the dresses and accessories that people will be bringing. Don't worry about sorting the donations; once we get them from you, we will sort through all of the donations you have received.
- SCHEDULE VOLUNTEERS — Make sure there are always enough volunteers on-site to help on the day(s) of your dress drive. It's better to schedule too many than to not have enough! Anticipate when the busiest times will be for donation drop-off and schedule extra people during those times.
- COLLECT DONATION INFORMATION — At the time you receive the donation, you must have each donor who wants a tax-deduction letter fill out a donation form (click to download a pdf) and a self-addressed envelope. The form and envelope must be pinned or attached to the dress or item. Each form must be filled out completely, including a description of the item(s) donated and the donor's estimated value of the item(s). REMEMBER: We cannot send out a tax-deduction letter unless we receive a completed donation form with the items being donated. Donors can provide an e-mail address on the donation form instead of a self-addressed envelope if they want to receive their tax-deduction letter via e-mail.
- DELIVER THE DONATIONS — Please call us at 533-PROM to arrange for delivery of the donations to us.
Group Collection
You can help lots of deserving young girls by arranging a group collection of prom dresses and items from your friends, relatives, classmates or co-workers.
Write, e-mail or call everyone you think may contribute and tell them to drop off their donations (dresses or monetary) at a location you choose. You can deliver the collected items to one of our drop-off locations.
Please remind participants that their donations are tax-deductible. Have them include a donation form and a self-addressed envelope (or e-mail address) with their donation to receive a tax-deduction letter in return.
Organize a Fund-Raiser
Financial assistance is also very important to our work at Kenzie's CLOSET. We use monetary donations to purchase dresses in sizes that are not normally donated as well as for buying accessories such as purses, shoes, shawls and costume jewelry.
Fund-raisers can be held year-round and we will be glad to help support you in any way. Please call 533-PROM or check our Web site periodically for ideas on what others have done in their school, church, workplace or community to raise money for Kenzie's CLOSET.
Here are some ideas that have proven to be fun and very successful fund-raisers:
- Bake sale
- Raffle
- Mother-Daughter Tea Party
Please let us know what you've got planned and we will make sure we post your event on our Web site on our NEWS page.
Corporate Involvement
Because Kenzie's CLOSET is 100% volunteer-supported, we rely on our corporate sponsors to help provide us with much-needed additional help.
Your monetary donations or in-kind donations of products and/or services are greatly appreciated and allow us to help more deserving young women each year enjoy the night of their dreams at their high school prom.
Please contact us for details on how you and your employees can help.
